Google was developed in 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page. It was their research project at Stanford University to find files on the Internet. Google is 20 years old now and one of  the most influential companies across the World.

Here are some fun facts that you might don’t know about this internet giant.

1. Google isn’t the first search engine

It is probably not the first ever search engine. Several search engines were already operating before it. Like AltaVista, AskJeeves, Yahoo! and others but Google has a better quality of search and a simple, ads free home page that helped it prevail as the most popular search engine.

2. It was initially called Backrub

Larry Page and Sergey Brin first named their search engine as ‘Backrub’. Thankfully they changed the original name and change it to Google,  it means the mathematical expression for a 1 followed by 100 zeros.

3. Set a Timer

Google can also work as a timer. Just write ‘timer’ after any amount of time and it will start a timer. This is helpful for students and kitchen working ladies.

4. You can filter your Gmail account

If you add “+anything” to your Gmail address it will still work, which means you could sign up to certain websites using and create a folder that all emails from that site automatically go into.

5. Google did not create ‘Android’

Google didn’t build android. It was created independently and then bought by Google for $50m. From the Samsung Galaxy S9 to the OnePlus 6, Google’s operating system for phones has become the main rival to Apple’s iPhone.

6. Do a Barrel Roll

It is one of the most fun facts. Just type ‘Do a barrel roll’ in search and the search engine will roll.

7. Play Atari Breakout

Just simple type ‘Atari Breakout’ on google images and you’ll find yourself playing the game for hours.
